The make-up of the Bafana Bafana team that will fight for glory in the Africa Cup of Nations finals was revealed a little bit on Thursday, but only a little bit when Hugo Broos named an initial 50-man squad for the tournament in Ivory Coast early next year.
The squad will have to be whittled down to 23 players by January 3, according to Confederation of African Football regulations, with Bafana meeting a Thursday deadline to present their initial squad.
The squad is made up of familiar faces who helped Bafana qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and take part in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November. But with a force of this size, there will inevitably be new callings.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi has been included in the squad, although Broos is likely to accompany his top three, Ronwen Williams, Veli Mothwa and Ricardo Goss, if fit, for the final.
Stellenbosch left-back Fawaaz Basadien is on the initial list, along with Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi and AmaZulu striker Tshepang Moremi.

Some players called up can only be selected if they recover in time. Midfielder Bathusi Aubaas has been absent from Mamelodi Sundowns for a long time, while Lyle Foster is currently absent from English Premier League side Burnley as he suffers from mental health issues.
Among the players playing abroad, the most surprising call-up is Siyabonga Ngezana, a former Kaizer Chiefs player called up after a successful season with Romanian Steaua Bucharest.
There is, however, no place in the team for striker Fagrie Lakay, despite his impressive season with Pyramids in Egypt.
