But what happens if you’ve taken someone’s SASSA card and want to return it to its rightful owner? Sometimes bank cards are lost or abandoned, but not found with their owner because the person who found them doesn’t know what to do with them.
Lost SASSA cards can be handed in by SAPS
If you find someone’s SASSA card and wish to return it to its rightful owner, it is important to take appropriate action:
Contact SASSA:
You can contact SASSA directly to report that you have received a SASSA card. They can provide advice on next steps and help connect the card to its owner.
Visit your nearest SASSA office:
If possible, visit your nearest SASSA office in person. Office staff can help you return the card to the rightful owner. They may have procedures in place to handle lost or found cards.
Use social media or local community platforms:
Use social media platforms or community forums to post information about the SASSA card you have obtained. Include details such as where it was found and any special markings on the map. This can increase the chances of reaching the rightful owner.
Give it to law enforcement:
If you are unable to contact SASSA or go to their office, consider surrendering the obtained SASSA card to local law enforcement authorities. They may have protocols in place to handle lost items and can help locate the cardholder.
Protect the card:
While waiting to return the card, keep it in a safe and secure place. Avoid spending money on the card because it belongs to the cardholder.
Returning a lost SASSA card is a responsible and caring step that can make a big difference to the cardholder. By taking appropriate action, you contribute to the overall well-being and safety of people who rely on social assistance.
LOST SASSA CARDS CAN BE RETURNED BY SAPS
If you have found a lost SASSA card (or anything containing someone’s personal data), it can be dropped off at your nearest police station.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is responsible for serving and protecting the country, but it can also be a legal entity where lost personal information can be left to its rightful owner.
A lost social grant card can also be reported to the South African Social Security Agency, who can take appropriate action.
If you have obtained someone else’s social grant card, you are not allowed to keep it, but you can contact SAPS or SASSA.
REPLACEMENT OF A LOST SASSA CARD
A lost social grant card can be returned to its rightful owner, but what if you are the person who needs their card replaced?
Lost cards can be replaced by first canceling the lost card and then applying for another one from the social grant agency. Contact the national hotline (or your nearest regional office) to find out more.
SASSA CARDS FOR 2024
Social grant cards will remain valid until 2024, despite earlier announcements that the grant cards could expire in December last year. If you receive your social grant in your bank account, you do not need to renew or replace your card – unless it is lost or stolen.
