Overall Pass Rate for Matriculants at 82.9%, Free State at the top: The overall pass rate for 2023 has achieved 82.9 percent, which is an increase of 2.8 percent compared to its 2022 counterparts.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the overall results in Gauteng. The Free State was the leading state with a pass rate of 89.3%.

The results are the best since the introduction of the National Certificate of Higher Education (BMT) examinations in 2008.

The Minister says, “Despite thousands of challenges, these young people have crossed the threshold and entered the next chapter of their lives. ”

The class of 2023 had a learning curve due to the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted studies in 2020 and 2021, when they were in grades 9 and 10 respectively.

Motshekga adds, “The overall impact of COVID-19 and the resulting learning losses and disengagement from education had a significant impact on this group. The rapid and collaborative response of the Department of Basic Education, teachers, parents, our partners in education and South Africans in general, led to the development of a comprehensive recovery program that, to a large extent, reduced the negative impact on student achievement. major learning milestones.”
