Funza Lushaka Bursary for Teachers South Africa 2024: The Department of Basic Education looks after schools across South Africa from grade R to grade 12 and adult literacy programmes. The DBE was previously part of the national Department of Education before being split into two parts: DBE (Department of Basic Education) and DHE (Department of Higher Education).
The department’s objectives are to create a sustainable South African education system for the 21st century – where all students have access to learning, training and education. Funza Lushaka Bursary for Teachers South Africa 2024
The Ministry of Education invites students to apply for the Funza Lushaka Scholarship Program for the 2024 academic year. Each year, the Funza Lushaka Scholarship is awarded to students with the following educational qualifications:
Undergraduate studies: a 4-year Bachelor of Education degree (BEd), which specialises in any of the following:
- Foundation Phase (Grade R to Grade 3) (preferably majoring in South African Indigenous Languages, Neurodevelopment Needs, Braille, SASL)
- Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to Grade 6) (preferably majoring in 2 of these subjects: Languages, Mathematics, and Natural Science & Technology)
- Senior and Further Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7 to Grade 12) (preferably majoring in 2 of these subjects: Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Technology, Civil Technology, Computer Applications Technology, Electrical Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Technology, Physical Sciences, Languages, Maritime studies, Coding and Robitics, Technical Mathematics and Technical Science)
Graduate studies: a 1-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for:
- Senior and Further Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7 to Grade 12)
The prestigious Funza Lushaka bursary is aimed at students who are studying to become teachers and is awarded annually, based of academic ability.
The scholarship will cover the following expenses: tuition, books, learning materials, accommodation, food, educational internship and a stipend for general living expenses, if available and subject to certain reductions.
Scholarships are awarded for one academic year at a time and students must reapply for funding each year. Renewal of the scholarship is NOT guaranteed, but depends on the student’s academic performance.
After graduation, scholars will be expected to teach in a public school (selected by the Provincial Department of Education (PED)) – the duration of the service contract will be the same as the duration of the scholarship received.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE LUSHAKA SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must meet the minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to meet all requirements will result in your application not being considered):
All applicants must meet the following criteria:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have a valid South African ID number
- You must be 30 years old or younger, if applying for the first time
- You must have been accepted to study towards a BEd degree or PGCE programme, specialising in at least 2 of the priority subject areas (extended programmes are not covered)
- You must have been accepted to study at a public university in South Africa
- You must have a strong academic record
- You must be willing to teach at any school, as selected by the Provincial Education Department (PED)
- You must NOT be a Higher Education Institution employees (or a spouse, dependent or child of a Higher Education Institution employee)
- You must be committed and passionate about a career in teaching, including having an interest in working with youth; enthusiasm for teaching; and be willing and ready to face challenges with integrity
- You must NOT have any other teaching qualifications
- You must NOT have a criminal record
- You must NOT have any charges of misconduct
- You must NOT have been dismissed from work
